    Integrated Management System

    Overview

Sauls Grading and Earthworx is a Queensland-based civil construction contractor delivering earthworks, site preparation, grading and associated infrastructure works across a range of projects. With a workforce of approximately 20 personnel, the company operates in environments involving mobile plant, excavation activities, traffic management, underground service interfaces and environmental controls.

The business has built a strong reputation for reliable project delivery, experienced supervision and practical problem-solving on site. As operations continued to mature and client expectations evolved, leadership identified the value of consolidating existing management practices into a structured Integrated Management System aligned with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.

Our scope was to design and implement an integrated framework that reflected how the company already delivered work—supporting quality outcomes, environmental responsibility and safe operations—while providing clear governance suited to a growing civil contractor.

    Business Context and Drivers

Sauls Grading and Earthworx had established operational systems supporting project planning, risk assessment, equipment management and site supervision. The leadership team maintained a hands-on approach and clear accountability across projects.

As the business continued to secure larger and more structured civil contracts, the directors saw an opportunity to formalise and integrate their existing arrangements within a cohesive management system framework. The intent was to bring quality, environmental and WHS processes into alignment under a single structure that would enhance visibility and consistency across projects.

    Key drivers included:

    • Consolidating established practices into one integrated framework
    • Providing clearer articulation of roles and responsibilities
    • Enhancing traceability of risk management and project documentation
    • Supporting long-term governance clarity as the business expanded

The engagement reflected organisational progression rather than correction. The objective was to formalise and integrate what was already working well into a system aligned with recognised standards and suited to future growth.

    Our Approach

We commenced with a structured review of existing procedures, site documentation, risk assessment tools and operational workflows. Workshops with directors and supervisors allowed us to map how work was planned, executed and reviewed in practice.

Using the ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 frameworks as reference points, we developed a proportionate Integrated Management System tailored to a 20-person civil contractor. The focus was on simplicity and usability.

    Key elements included:

    • A single integrated manual linking quality, environmental and WHS obligations
    • A unified risk management process covering operational, environmental and safety risks
    • Streamlined document control and corrective action processes
    • Clear accountability structures aligned with site supervision roles

Documentation was intentionally concise and practical, ensuring supervisors could apply the system in the field without unnecessary administrative burden.

    Outcomes and Benefits

The Integrated Management System delivered measurable operational benefits:

    • Improved clarity of responsibilities across projects
    • More consistent risk identification and control processes
    • Stronger visibility of quality and environmental obligations
    • Increased readiness for client and third-party audits
    • Greater consistency across multiple civil worksites

The system now provides a structured foundation that supports both daily operations and future certification alignment.

    Key Takeaways

    • Integrating existing processes under a single framework improves clarity without adding complexity.
    • Proportionate systems are essential for small civil contractors operating in high-risk environments.
    • Aligning to recognised standards can support sustainable growth and client confidence.

This project demonstrates how a practical, integrated management system can enhance governance, support operational consistency and position a growing civil contractor for long-term success.
